New State Rules for Sexually Oriented Businesses

A signature from Governor Jay Nixon puts new restrictions on the state’s strip clubs and adult stores.  Nixon signed Senate bills 586 and 617 into law on Friday.

The bills prohibit anyone from establishing a sexually oriented business within one thousand feet of a school, house of worship, state licensed day care, public library, public park, residence, or any other sexually oriented business.

People who have been convicted of certain crimes can now be barred by the state from owning an adult business.

Behavior inside the clubs will change with the bills banning nudity, alcohol, minors, and touching between seminude employees and customers.

The bills also prohbit adult businesses from operating between midnight and 6 in the morning.

Apparently non-strippers in the club will also have to be fully clothed under the legislation.

Several lawyers for adult businesses have already said they plan to file suit challenging the new rules.  A similar law passed by the Missouri General Assembly back in 2005 was eventually struck down by the Missouri Supreme Court.  If Senate bills 586 and 617 are not successfully challenged they will take effect August 28th.
