McCaskill Discusses Leaks

The government may have found the source of leaked documents on the Afghanistan war.

KRMS Reporter Ashley Teague has the name of the suspect and some reaction from Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill.

‘Classified military documents related to the war in Afghanistan have been leaked to the public. The pentagon is focusing on Bradley Manning as the main suspect in the leaks. Senator Clair McCaskill talks about her views on the leaks.’

“Well, I think it’s important that they try to find out where the leak came from just because clearly whoever did this is more concerned with an agenda concerning the war than they are with whether or not the military is being protected as they fight a war and that’s problematic that someone has access to these kinds of records and that would do this,” says McCaskill.

‘She also talks about her concerns and what should be done about the leaks.’

“So I’m concerned about it, obviously. I think they need to take a hard look at the security of the access to some of this information that has been released.”

‘President Obama says there’s nothing new or informative in the leaked information. McCaskill tells us her take on that statement.’

“Well, I think that if you dig through it you can find a few kernels of things that probably isn’t a good idea to be in the public domain as we try to protect men and women who are in a very far flung place from here and taking their lives in their hand every day by getting out of their bunks.”

‘Senator McCaskill believes that a lot of the leaked information should never have been classified to begin with.’

“But your point is a good one and that is that they aggressively classify things and perhaps that over-classification leads to this kind of problem. If they would be more careful about what they classify maybe they could do a better job of protecting it.”
