UPDATE: Eldon Man Takes His Own Life

A standoff in Miller County ends after a man wanted for questioning in a shooting takes his own life.

38 year old Charles Knaebel had barricaded himself and his son and daughter inside his home after a shooting incident Thursday night.  Knaebel shot and injured a dog that had come near his property off of VFW and Witt road in Miller County.  The man’s neighbor, Joan Short, was outside and there was a confrontation.  Knaebel then fired several rounds at his neighbor, hitting her once in the leg. She is recovering.  Highway patrol and local authorities began the standoff late Thursday using sound and flashing lights to keep the Miller County man awake.  Just before noon Saturday there was a break when Knaebel released his children. They were dehydrated but unhurt. The children were reunited with their mother and taken for examination.  Shortly after the boy and girl were released and as the standoff reached the 42 hour mark, authorities stormed the home and found Knabel inside, dead from a self inflicted gunshot wound. Over 100 officers from across the state were involved in the operation.
