The deadline for Lake Area residents to file their taxes may be over; however the Better Business Bureau is urging consumers to be on guard against identity theft. It’s being reported that filing online is a common way a person’s identity is stolen. Scam artists often send emails, texts or phone calls advertising phony tax services. The BBB attributes the increase in identity theft to more internet use. Consumers are encouraged to use up to date spy ware and malware on their computers and to be careful about which websites they visit. Residents are also encouraged to secure paper documents, shred old files and do research on their tax service.
