Across the United States and around the world, people are preparing for a new disease carried by mosquitoes that currently has no cure or vaccine. It’s called Chikungunya and several cases occur year round in the united states. Recently, local mosquitoes in Florida have started to carry the disease. Fiasal Khan is the director of communicable disease control for the St. Louis county department of health where someone has reported having the disease after returning from a recent trip
Khan explains how long the symptoms will last
Khan says that the case in st. Louis was a resident who traveled outside the country and contracted it and it was not a local mosquito issue like Florida is currently seeing. However, Khan does believe that is will eventually spread across the us like the west nile virus did. He says it’s best to use plenty of bug spray if you plan to go out during the daytime when these mosquitoes are most active.
