Former House Member Says Right To Farm Is His

LoehnerAfter all the talk on both sides about the right to farm proposal an outcome is on the way next week and now a former Missouri House member says he came up with the idea for a farming-rights proposal while riding a tractor several years ago. Voters on Tuesday will decide whether to adopt proposed Constitutional Amendment 1, which creates a right to farming and ranching in Missouri. It was referred to the ballot last year by the Republican-led legislature. Former Republican Rep. Tom Loehner says the idea came to him while spreading fertilizer on his Osage County farm in 2009. He said it grew out of conversations with some urban legislators, who Loehner said didn’t understand how their food was produced. The proposal failed to pass the legislature for several years and ultimately succeeded only after Loehner left office. Opponents still contend it could help shield corporate farms from regulations.
