May Is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

share the road

With the month of May being motorcycle safety awareness month the Missouri Department of Transportation wants drivers to be mindful of the increasing numbers of motorcyclists on the road. As temperatures get warmer, you can expect the number of motorcyclists around the lake to increase significantly. MODOT recommends drivers use the following precautions in order to prevent a fatal crash with a motorcycle. Don’t text while driving. Obey all traffic laws. Allow the motorcycle the full width of a lane at all times and check all mirrors and blind spots for motorcycles before changing lanes or merging with traffic. 72 people died in motorcycle crashes in 2013, down from 102 in 2012. But if drivers follow those steps and pay extra attention we could lower those numbers for next year.
