The Sunrise Beach Board of Trustees approved drafting an ordinance to increase water rates following a second public hearing that was held Monday night. The base residential rate will increase from $39 per 5 thousand gallons to $45 per 4 thousand gallons. The base commercial rate will go up from $39 per one thousand gallons to $45 per two thousand gallons. During the public comment portion of the hearing a number of concerns were raised by both residential and commercial customers including the belief that low income renters and single moms will not be able to afford the proposed increase. Some also believe there should be some type of compensation for businesses due to the economic downturn. The board will vote on the proposed increase at its next meeting which is scheduled for September 8th at city hall.
