LED lights have grown in popularity, due in part to their brightness. But the Coast Guard says those lights may cause problems with the communications systems on your boat. The transformers on the lights operate on frequencies that may be interfering with your VHF radios and your Automatic Identification System, or AIS. You’re encouraged to test your system for interference, and if you detect any, report it to the Coast Guard Navigation Center. You can reduce the interference by replacing the lights with incandescent fixtures or increasing the separation between the lights and your antenna.
