An issue with locating 9-1-1 callers using cell phones in Camden County may be largely out of the hands of those who operate the system. 9-1-1 coordinator Linda Clemons says they can only act off the information provided by phone carriers. Callers are located by pinpointing their coordinates after the 9-1-1 center has determined which cell tower the call originates from. Terrain can block cell signal in Camden County and the occasional problems at the towers themselves can make that process harder.
Some popular apps on your phone, including Raft-Up, can locate your exact location, but Clemons says that’s because those operate directly off of GPS coordinates, whereas calls to 9-1-1 rely soley on cell signal and getting coordinates from the right tower.
Clemons says obviously more towers and improved cell service will greatly improve the 9-1-1 service.
