If all goes according to plan, by the end of next year, an old 144 mile rail line should be property of the state. Ameren currently owns the old Rock Island rail line, which stretches from Windsor to Beaufort, passing through Eldon and Versailles. The plan is for the state to develop the rail line into a new hiking and biking trail. This announcement comes after Missouri trails and state parks hit an all-time record for visitors this year at nearly 42 million. While Ameren is set to transfer the property to the Department of Natural by the end of next year, the exact timeline for when development will begin has not been set.
