The annual statewide Shakeout drill is a week away, and so far, nearly 450,000 Missourians are signed up to take part. The drill actually takes place in several states that could be affected by a major earthquake in the New Madrid Seismic Zone. 448,000 people are registered in Missouri, and more than two and a half million over in another 13 states. The drill takes place every year. This year it will be held October 18th at 10:18 a.m. Participants are encouraged to drop to their hands and knees, cover their heads and necks, get under a table or desk, and hold on until shaking stops. Geologists estimate that there’s a 7-10% chance of a major quake in the New Madrid zone sometime in the next 50 years.
