It’s Banned Book Week at libraries all over the country.
According to one library marketing director, it’s meant to draw attention to attempts at censorship and to celebrate books, because we have access to all kinds of information. Banned Book Week is meant to show that we shouldn’t have challenged books or banned books. If you don’t like a book…don’t read it!
Some books banned around America in the past include such classics as “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” by Mark Twain and “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee. The Bible has also been included on lists of books to be banned.
In 1969, The American Heritage Dictionary was banned in Eldon, Missouri for a time, because someone there thought it contained almost 40 naughty words.
Banned Book Week runs September 30th through October 6th.
