A bill to require better communication from the U.S. Postal Service has passed through the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. The bill addresses “temporary” closures of postal facilities for reasons of disaster, shortage of personnel, or any other extenuating circumstances. It requires that the postal service establish a plan for reopening those facilities, and that it remains in contact with local communities that are affected by providing regular status updates. Officials in Laurie are still working to get their contracted postal unit reopened after it closed more than a year ago. That closure was also supposed to just be “temporary.”
