You might have to forgive law enforcement and the various child protective services in the Lake Area, statewide and beyond if they are feeling a little blue today. That’s because all this month is National Child Abuse Prevention Month…an observance to recognize the relationships and efforts between the organizations seeking to bring to an end years of abuse endured by too many of our children. The statistics are staggering…with one in every four children experiencing abuse or neglect in their lifetimes, 32 children in Missouri alone died from abuse or neglect in 2017, parents and relatives and other primary caretakers account for the majority of child abusers, and the total lifetime economic burden from new abuse/neglect cases…fatal and non-fatal…totaling $124-BILLION. To recognize the month, supporters of the cause are encouraged to wear blue every Friday. The Miller County Courthouse along with a number of other government agencies and businesses have also joined in the observation by placing several blue pinwheels on the lawn.
