October is breast cancer awareness month. The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 266,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed this year alone. Some women are at a higher risk than others. That includes those who had their first child after the age of 35, women who’ve never given birth, those who had their first menstrual period before they were 12, and those who start menopause after age 55. Warning signs include lumps in the breast or armpit areas, thickening or swelling of the breasts, redness or flaky skin around the nipple, and nipple discharge.
