A Camden County man who shot and killed another man during a scuffle recently claims a Missouri Statute violates his constitutional rights. Stephen Burkhart was arguing with Joseph Beeman last month and Beeman fired shots at Burkhart. Burkhart returned fire, killing Beeman. However, Burkhart is a convicted felon so, according to the Missouri Statute, he cannot legally possess a firearm. Burkhart claims that such a statute violates his 2nd amendment right to bear arms. He also states that because he was transferred to Morgan County Detention Center, he cannot travel to his court hearings, which violates his right to due process. Burkhart will be representing himself when he appears in front of the Camden County Circuit on October 3rd.
