Ameren Offers Help For Those Who Cannot Afford Higher Utility Bills

January 21, 2021 By KRMS News Anchor Leave a Comment

Colder temperatures will return to Lake of the Ozarks, and that could mean higher utility bills.

Ameren Missouri says help is available if you’re having a hard time paying for energy as the COVID-19 pandemic continues.

Officials say the federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program has money remaining, but the number of applicants are low.

Ameren says it’s been helping Missourians keep up with energy costs since March.

Financial help available for central Missouri families facing COVID-19 hardship

Ameren Missouri encourages customers to apply for available energy assistance dollars and utilize payment programs

JEFFERSON CITY (Jan. 19, 2021) – Energy assistance dollars are still available for families in central Missouri who are experiencing financial strain due to the coronavirus pandemic. The federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), administered by the Missouri Department of Social Services, has funds available. Ameren Missouri is also offering payment agreements and working with customers to avoid disconnection.

“This time of year following the holidays can come with an extra financial burden for families, and the pandemic has made things even worse,” said Tara Oglesby, vice president of customer experience at Ameren Missouri. “That’s why we are continuing to offer payment plans with more flexible terms than normal, and doing everything we can to work with our customers during this challenging time. This includes working to ensure that families who are new to being in a low-income bracket are aware of what options are available.”

Since March, the company has helped thousands of Missourians with their statement balances and provided nearly $12 million in energy assistance and charitable contributions.

“We are encouraged because families in central Missouri are contacting us and our partner agencies every day for help, but we know thousands more are eligible for these funds and haven’t applied,” said Connie Taylor, manager of customer advocacy at Ameren Missouri. “When customers don’t reach out, their balances keep growing and available assistance dollars go unused.”

The following programs are ready to help customers who apply:

Federal assistance program: Low Income Home Energy Assistance (LIHEAP)

Federal assistance is available through LIHEAP, administered by the Missouri Department of Social Services. Ameren Missouri works with contracted community action agencies to distribute LIHEAP funds. Some LIHEAP agencies report an abundance of funding available, but a decrease in application volume.

LIHEAP can help in two ways; through a one-time payment for a heating bill from November through March, or through the winter Energy Crisis Intervention Program (ECIP). ECIP helps pay up to $800 toward fuel bills when a household’s energy is shut off or at risk of disconnection.

To be eligible for LIHEAP funds, customers must:

  • Be responsible for paying home heating costs.
  • Have $3,000 or less in bank accounts, retirement accounts or investments.
  • Have a household income less than 135% of the federal poverty level (a monthly income of $2,400 for a family of three or $2,897 for a family of four).
  • Be a U.S. citizen or legally admitted for permanent residence.
  • For more details, including a video explanation in English and Spanish, visit AmerenMissouri.com/LIHEAP.
Image

Applying for LIHEAP has never been easier. To apply:

  • Contact your local Community Action Agency; or
  • Call 855-FSD-INFO (855-373-4636) to request an application; or
  • Apply via a new online portal at MyDSS.MO.gov/energy-assistance.

Ameren Missouri encourages customers to utilize LIHEAP funds to get current on their energy statement, then enroll in the company’s Keeping Current program to help stay on track.

Keeping Current

Ameren Missouri’s Keeping Current program makes customer energy bills more affordable by offering monthly bill credits and a reduction in past-due balances. When qualifying customers remain enrolled in the program and stay current on their bills, they continue to receive ongoing credits along with reductions in the total amount owed.

Keeping Current is administered by contracted community action agencies. To apply, contact your local agency. Find more details and a list of participating agencies here.

Payment Agreements

Customers who owe for past due service have the opportunity to make a payment arrangement with Ameren Missouri to avoid disconnection. The Deferred Payment Agreement is a long-term installment payment option. It offers more time to pay a balance for customers who have active accounts.

The online payment assistance tool provides eligible payment assistance options based on a customer’s account status. Learn more at AmerenMissouri.com.

For a complete list of energy assistance programs, visit AmerenMissouri.com/energyassistance.

Ameren Missouri has been providing electric and gas service for more than 100 years, and the company’s electric rates are among the lowest in the nation. Ameren Missouri’s mission is to power the quality of life for its 1.2 million electric and 132,000 natural gas customers in central and eastern Missouri. The company’s service area covers 64 counties and more than 500 communities, including the greater St. Louis area. EPA Calls On HyVee To Remove Specific Disinfectant Wipe

January 13, 2021 By KRMS News Anchor Leave a Comment

HyVee is being told by the Federal EPA to stop selling the “Outlaw Germ Justice Disinfectant Wipes” immediately.

Officials say the company that manufactures the wipes, MJB Worldwide, failed to register the product with the EPA and they continue to be non-compliant.

Companies like MJB who manufacture a pesticide, including ones that like pathogens, must register with the EPA for consumer use.

EPA Officials have told HyVee it must remove the product and it will not be allowed to sell it moving forward.

Customers who’ve already purchased the item are asked to return it for a full refund.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Lenexa, Kan., Jan. 12, 2021) – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has ordered MJB Worldwide LLC and Hy-Vee Inc. to stop the sale and distribution of disinfectant wipes that EPA says are noncompliant with federal law and may represent a danger to consumers.

“During the COVID-19 pandemic, EPA has observed increased production and sale of unregistered products claiming to kill viruses and other pathogens,” said David Cozad, director of EPA Region 7’s Enforcement and Compliance Assurance Division. “The Agency is determined to protect consumers from these unlawful and potentially dangerous products.”

EPA issued the “Stop Sale, Use, or Removal Orders” to MJB Worldwide and Hy-Vee on Jan. 11, 2021. These orders require immediate termination of all distribution and sales of Outlaw Germ Justice Disinfectant Wipes and prohibit all future sales of the product at any Hy-Vee locations in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska.

MJB Worldwide LLC produces and distributes “Outlaw Germ Justice Disinfectant Wipes,” claiming the product kills bacteria and viruses. According to EPA, the company failed to register the product in violation of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act. Under the law, any manufacturer of a pesticide – including those intended to kill pathogens – must register the product with EPA. The registration process protects public health by evaluating the product’s ingredients; where it is to be used; the amount, frequency and timing of its use; and product storage and disposal practices.

After EPA contacted MJB Worldwide in November 2020 about an unregistered product, the company assured the Agency that it had recalled all Outlaw disinfectant products and that any future production would be done in compliance with federal law. However, on Jan. 6, 2021, an EPA inspector discovered a reformulated version of Outlaw wipes available for sale at a Hy-Vee grocery store in Overland Park, Kansas. The inspector also identified that the product’s label described concentrations of chemicals that could cause severe eye and skin irritation if used improperly.

December 23, 2020 By KRMS News Anchor Leave a Comment

A bill pre-filed by State Representative Suzie Pollock, who represents part of the Lake community, will impact vaccine requirements for school children.

Pollock says the legislation removes requirements that force parents to have their child vaccinated, in order to attend school.

The provisions would be in place of all school-age children at all Lake area schools and colleges.

Another bill pre-filed by Pollock also aims to help identify any child deaths related to the vaccine, by requiring the county medical examiner, physician or coroner to refer all cases related to the vaccine within 36 hours.

The bill also requires they indicate their vaccinations at the time of death.

Tips For Keeping Clean With COVID 19 @ KRMSRADIO.COM

March 21, 2020 By KRMS Newsroom Leave a Comment

There are many ways you can stay safe from the coronavirus.

Health officials are recommending best practices for you and your family, such as sheltering in place and practicing social distancing.

It’s also recommended that you wash your hands for at least 20 seconds when you return home.

You can also keep a set of Lysol wipes or gloves on hand to use at grocery stories and gas stations.

But what about your home itself? Officials say just like any spring cleaning you may have already been planning, make sure to wipe down and disinfect everything you may come into contact with.

That includes door knobs, faucets, the kitchen counter, and even keyboards and light switches.

If Lysol sprays or wipes aren’t an option, you can use antibacterial cleaning sprays or cleaners such as magic erasers to cleanse the area on a day to day basis.

School of the Osage Officials Say Plans Are in Place for Coronavirus

March 6, 2020 By KRMS Newsroom Leave a Comment

All the hype and media attention nationwide being generated by the spread of the Coronavirus could actually prevent the spread of other everyday illnesses such as the common cold or the flu. That’s according to School of the Osage Superintendent Doctor Laura Nelson who, this week, directed a letter reassuring district patrons that the situation is being closely monitored. Doctor Nelson also says, if the virus should be discovered locally, a plan of attack is in place to work with the CDC and local health officials to minimize any potential spread of the virus. Among the tips for the general public to follow…

 — Wash hands often with soap and water

 — Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands;

 — avoid close contact with others who are sick;

 — stay home when sick;

 — cover mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing;

–  clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

At the current time, the risk of the coronavirus in the lake area is considered to be low. More information on the virus can be found on the CDC’s website.

Attorney General: No Criminal Activity to Justify TCLA Investigation

February 15, 2020 By KRMS Newsroom Leave a Comment

A request for an inquiry into the Tri-County Lodging Association appears to be dead in the water for now. The matter was submitted to the Camden County Prosecutor by the County Commission. Prosecutor Heather Miller says her office is not an investigative agency and felt it would be better if the matter were handled by an outside agency in the interest of transparency. She sent it to the Attorney General’s office along with all the accompanying paperwork. After a thorough review, the AG’s office found no evidence of criminal activity and declined to open a formal investigation. The State Auditor’s office also has declined to look into the matter, saying they have no jurisdiction to perform an audit without a petition from each of the contributing counties.

The bodies of Anand and Kourtney Torres were found in early November with no cause of death clearly evident. Since then, autopsies have been conducted along with toxicology tests. VPD Officer Recognized for Ending Pursuit in Morgan County

January 1, 2020 By KRMS Newsroom Leave a Comment

An officer from the Versailles City Police Department is being recognized for going beyond the call of duty to help bring an end a vehicle pursuit in Morgan County. Sheriff Norman Dills says the incident happened in June when his department requested assistance from the VPD. Officer Cassidy Keene responded to the intersection of Old Highway 5 and Route-W where the fleeing subject rammed her patrol car, resulting in the patrol car being partially disabled and leaving Keene with non-disclosed injuries. Keene was still able to pursue the suspect, eventually taking him into custody after he crashed into a field. The actions by Keene, according to Sheriff Dills, resulted in the felony arrests of two suspects and the seizure of a large amount of illegal narcotics. For her efforts, during the sheriff’s department’s recent annual awards banquet, Captain JD Williams presented Officer Keene with a certificate and a medal of merit.

Ameren Says Start Preparing for Winter Drawdown

December 13, 2019 By KRMS Newsroom Leave a Comment

Dock owners on the lake as well as the Osage River are being encouraged to start preparing now for the approaching winter drawdown. Ameren says they’ll begin the annual practice of lowering the lake level in January. It’s done each year to clear room in the reservoir for heavy spring rains. They say people below the dam should remove docks before freezing occurs. Those who leave docks on the water should take steps to winterize them, including:

– Lengthening your connector cables
– Ensure your hinges and other connections are flexible enough to follow fluctuating water levels
– Use a dock deicer
– Ask neighbors to keep an eye on your dock or retain a contractor who can respond to the site if your property is going to be unoccupied
You’re also encouraged to monitor lake and river levels. You can do so online or by calling 573-365-9205.

Thanksgiving Now and Thanksgiving Then

November 28, 2019 By KRMS Newsroom Leave a Comment

It is Thanksgiving Day…a day for family gatherings, maybe watch a little football, do a little reminiscing and partake in different beverages and the traditional feast. However, according to Lake Area historian Bill Moulder…speaking earlier this week on the “Morning Magazine”…that traditional feast back in the day would be quite a bit different than what’s generally being served up today. Moulder also says traveling for the holiday back then was usually no more than maybe a 20-mile trip each way with no comparison to the travelling of today. Rabbit, squirrel and fish were among other traditional fares back in the day during a time when the original holiday celebrated a successful harvest.

Drivers Share Responsibility for Safety on Wintery Roads

November 19, 2019 By KRMS Newsroom Leave a Comment

Some people have been critical of the response by area road crews to the winter weather event that hit the area last week. Several others have praised the way the departments handled the situation. Pat Wolfe is the Road and Bridge Administrator for Camden County and he says even when they prepare in advance, they can’t be everywhere at once, and different areas will be affected in different ways when the weather changes rapidly.

      NEWS-11-19-19 Wolfe 1 - 19th November 2019

Storm response relies on a network of communication between different counties, agencies, and even calls from the public.

      NEWS-11-19-19 Wolfe 2 - 19th November 2019

Even with pre-treatment and a rapid, well-planned response, the road crews cannot keep every road perfect every hour of the day. Watching the weather and being a responsible driver plays a big part in your safety on the roadways.

Bogus Bills Reported in Laurie

November 14, 2019 By KRMS Newsroom Leave a Comment

There are some bogus bills floating around Laurie. Police Chief Mark Black says a number of area businesses have been receiving phony $100 bills. They should be pretty easy to spot, but apparently they’ve still been slipping through. The Chief says the funny money is darker than most bills and has a different texture. They also have a dark blue stripe on the front and what appears to be Chinese writing on the back. In addition, so far all the bills recovered have had the same serial number. If you receive one of the bad bills try to get a description of the person who passed it along with their vehicle, and contact the police.

Feds Cut Interest Rate Despite “Weakening Economy”

October 30, 2019 By KRMS Newsroom Leave a Comment

For the third time since July, the Federal Reserve cut interest rates on Wednesday but, probably, not by as much as most would like to see…by one-quarter of a point from 1.75% down to 1.50%. With the change, according to Bill Lacasse from SRG Financial in Osage Beach, the markets will likely respond in a positive fashion…

      NEWS-10-31-19 Fed Rate-A - 31st October 2019

Lacasse also says any move by the market could be short-lived based on commentary by Fed Chairman Jerome Powell who indicated that, based on current conditions, no future reductions should be anticipated any time soon…

      NEWS-10-31-19 Fed Rate-B - 31st October 2019

A combination of factors including soon-to-be released GDP numbers, strong consumer spending and corporate earnings plus near-record low unemployment should keep the market fairly stable and heading in a good direction. Yesterday the DOW, Nasdaq and S&P all closed with strong gains for the day.

It features propane appliances, including a high-efficiency furnace, water heater, range & oven, and fireplace. The Missouri Propane Education and Research Council says using propane can help reduce your carbon footprint and save cash on your energy bills.

Wings, Waves, and Wheels: The Highway Patrol at LOTO Series Part 5

October 4, 2019 By KRMS Newsroom Leave a Comment

Today in our final installment of Wings, Waves, and Wheels we focus on the efforts of the water patrol to educate and prevent accidents at the lake. Corporal Stacey Mosher says the key is to be proactive…so you don’t have to be reactive.

      stacey cut 7 - 4th October 2019

Mosher works with the water safety council, she and other members of the water patrol do presentations to schools, businesses, anyone that will listen regarding water safety, wearing lifevests, and respecting the dangers that come with being around water.

      stacey cut 8 - 4th October 2019

To prevent accidents, it’s important to know as much as possible about what causes them. Many people ignore or are ignorant of a law requiring them to report accidents.

      stacey cut 10 - 4th October 2019

It’s estimated that there are over a hundred unreported accidents at the lake every year.

      stacey cut 11 - 4th October 2019

Of course Missouri does have a boater safety requirement, but only for those born after January 1st of 1984. Mosher says education, and what is being taught, is important for state residents and visitors alike.

      stacey cut 5 - 4th October 2019

Missouri law only requires you take the course once, but Mosher says she wouldn’t mind seeing a required refresher course.

      stacey cut 4 - 4th October 2019

Another common problem that refresher courses could help with is something Mosher describes as “buoy fatigue.” There are thousands of buoys on the lake and many people mistakenly think they’re all the same.

      stacey cut 9 - 4th October 2019

Despite the number of water patrol officers at the lake, their efforts only go so far…the biggest part of staying safe ultimately comes down to following the existing laws……and that’s what the Patrol is here to remind us of.

This series has been brought to you by Castle Defense 360 security consultants. See them online at www.castledefense360.com. We’d also like to extend our gratitude to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Sgt. Scott White, Sgt. Dustin Metzner, Trooper Matt Acord, and Corporal Stacey Mosher for their outstanding cooperation, without which this series would not have been possible. Thank you for tuning in to Wings, Waves, and Wheels.
