A bill signed into law by Governor Mike Parson will allow more communities to use sales taxes to help pay for public safety projects. Senate Bill 21 added three cities to a list of communities approved to impose the taxes. It also changes the rates that cities can charge. The new rules state that cities can request taxpayer approval on a half-percent sales tax. In the lake area, Laurie previously expressed desire to hold a vote on a half-percent sales tax for public safety but had to rescind their ordinance because it was not permitted under the old law.
