Charges have been filed in a standoff with police earlier this month. According to the Benton County Prosecuting Attorney, 58 year old George Smith JR is facing charges of first degree assault, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon. Smith was involved in a domestic dispute with his wife where he allegedly shot her. When police arrived he began to shoot at them, turning the call for help into a 3 ½ hour stand off with police before coming to an end. Deputies from the Benton County Sheriff’s office along with the Warsaw Police Department and the Highway Patrol where involved in the stand off at Falling Rock Avenue. Deputies found thousands of rounds of ammunition along with several weapons in the home. Smith is currently being held in the Benton County Jail on a $500,000 bond and faces life sentences for the assaults and 3 or more years on each count armed criminal action if convicted.
