The city has a new police department housed with city hall, new holding cells, a full staff, and zero insurance claims in the past three years.
Chief Mark Maples says as the season gets into full swing, things are moving along well.
“The department is running pretty smooth. We’ve got some good people. We’ve got good things going on here. I think the city has worked with the police department in order to make change and to bring things forward in a more positive manner. So we’re just going to continue on the path that we’re on,” says Maples.
The chief says there are some areas that need work.
“Hopefully things will continue to improve for us. We also have lots of room for improvement with both the way we do business and the way people perceive us.”
“I’m not satisfied with the fact that we can’t improve because there’s always room for improvement. I think that as long as I’m the chief here, we’re going to keep trying to improve.”
Overall though the chief thinks the public perception of the police department has changed.
“You know, meet the needs at the best of our ability and serve in a manner which we do things so that we make as many people happy as we can.”
The police department and city hall are now located next to Bentley’s on Bagnell Dam Boulevard.
