If you travel with a young child in your car, the Highway Patrol is urging you to take the necessary steps to ensure their safety. This is National Child Passenger Safety Week. The purpose is to remind parents of the importance of child safety seats and seatbelt usage for kids. Children under 40lbs must be in a restraint system. Kids 4-8 years old weighing less than 80lbs and under 4’9 must use a restraint system or booster seat, while kids over 80 pounds or taller than 4’9 need to wear a seatbelt. Last year, 20 kids under the age of 8 were killed in crashes. Another 1900+ were injured. In those cases, troopers issued over 1600 citations for failure to properly restrain the children.
