The city of Versailles’ police department recently shot several of the geese at the Versailles sewer plant who can reach numbers in the hundreds in an effort to deter and scatter more of the birds away from the facility. Mayor Terry Silvey says that the geese are a health concern to citizens in the city. The geese have been out by the plant for years and due to the fact there is a water source they end up gravitating toward the area, Mayor Silvey said. Silvey said the city has problems when there are a huge number of geese. When large numbers congregate they leave a lot of droppings which city officials said they consider a health issue. They do not want to but shooting geese is a last resort.
