Reducing the number of highway fatalities in Missouri was the focus of a conference last week in Colombia.
The state’s 2022 Highway Safety and Traffic Conference included over 500 local and national safety experts who discussed the findings of MO-DOT’s strategic highway safety plan known as “Show Me Zero.”
It cites rising deaths on state roads and highways with 1,016 last year – the highest number since 2006.
Show Me Zero cites reasons why Missouri’s roadways are more dangerous than other states.
They include a rising number of miles driven in the state, and the prevalence of risky behaviors, including excessive speeds, aggressive driving, distraction and impairment.
