Congressman Todd Akin will run for the Republican nomination to challenge Senator Claire McCaskill in next year’s election. At a news conference announcing his Senate candidacy this morning in his home district in the St. Louis suburb of Creve Coeur, Akin said “I’m going to be offering the people of Missouri a literal exact opposite record of Claire McCaskill.” Akin is the second Republican to enter the race. Former state Treasurer Sarah Steelman announced her candidacy earlier this year. Missouri’s Senate seat is one of the top targets for Republicans hoping to regain a Senate majority in the 2012 elections.
