At high noon on Saturday, the first section of the Old Hurricane Deck Bridge was brought down. The demolition had been scheduled for Thursday, but was pushed back because of winter weather. One of the engineers involved in the demolition says it will take about one to two weeks for crews to fish the one million pounds of steel out of the lake.
The old Hurricane Deck Bridge, spanning the Lake of the Ozarks near Sunrise Beach is eight spans long. Three spans are concrete girders and five spans are steel truss girders. Only the steel truss spans will be removed by blasting. The Missouri Department of Transportation says the next demolition blast of another 700 feet of the old bridge will happen in two weeks.
