A Miller County Sheriff’s Deputy has lost his life in the line of duty. It happened just before 6:00 Friday evening on Route Y when 26-year-old Casey Shoemate was responding to an emergency call. Reports indicate that Shoemate attempted to pass another emergency vehicle just north of Rabbit Hill Road when his sheriffs department’s cruiser was involved in a head-on collision with an SUV driven by 65-year-old Robert Levin, of Florissant. Both drivers had been wearing their seat belts. Shoemate, a School of the Osage graduate, was pronounced dead at the scene. Levin was flown to University Hospital with serious injuries.
