A recent training exercise brought together two groups you may not normally picture working together….the Highway Patrol Bomb Squad and the Department of Natural Resources. Brittany King is the on-scene coordinator for the DNR’s Environmental Emergency Response Teams. She says the training is vital in case the two groups ever have to cross paths – for instance, in the event of a homeland security incident where they would have to back up and assist each other.
The EER teams have equipment that helps them identify whether unknown substances are potentially unstable or explosive. The recent training also helps them to identify substances by the color of the smoke from an explosion. King says the training helps them to be prepared when they’re called upon and know what they’re dealing with.
King says the DNR conducts internal trainings three times a year.
