Mayor Chuck Chorpening’s appointment of officer Shane Edwards to chief of police was approved by the board by a vote of three to one. Chief Edwards says he hopes to bring an evenhandedness to the position.
“The biggest thing they can expect from me as chief and the officers the work here is we want to work together with the public,” Chief Edwards said. “We’re here to serve, that’s what we were sworn to do and that’s what we will do.”
“They can expect the law to be applied equally and fairly across the board.”
Laurie also approved a budget amendment for the police department after a jump in fuel costs. The chief says the simple reason is more officers driving the city on patrol.
“That was one of the goals I had coming in to here and no bones about it, the discussion that the mayor and I had and the council, they wanted to see the officers doing their job. That’s all we have really been asked to do is our job.”
The chief was also given approval Wednesday to hire an officer, bringing the total number of patrolmen up to four.
