The Missouri Farm Bureau is pushing back against a lawsuit that’s been filed over the right to use the term “meat” on products sold across the state. The suit challenges a new state law that restricts use of that terminology to products produced through the slaughter of an animal. Groups including the ACLU and the Good Food Institute claim the law is too restrictive. They feel it violates freedom of speech and quashes competition. Eric Bohl of the Missouri Farm Bureau appeared on “The Ozarks Today” on KRMS and says the bill’s simply about truth in labeling.
The new law, which hasn’t taken effect yet, is the first of its kind in the country. The federal lawsuit is expected to be precedent-setting and is drawing national attention.
