Local realtors and community leaders were on hand this week for a meeting with FEMA at Osage Beach city hall. They came to voice their concern about possible inaccuracies associated with flood insurance rate maps (FIRM). The forum was organized by U.S. Representative Blaine Luetkemeyer after he received concerns about inaccurate mapping hurting property owners as well as real estate resells and new development. After discussions, FEMA officials indicated they would be doing a validation study of the Lake’s flood maps and were open to working with local governments to obtain and utilize more precise topographical mapping. The issue stems from new flood insurance rate maps that were issued in 2011 which resulted in many lake front property owners having to obtain expensive flood insurance.
