A 4-year-old child is dead after fire swept through a trailer home in Moniteau County. Sheriff
Tony Wheatley says the call to the trailer in McGirk was received late Monday morning and
upon arrival, deputies discovered heavy smoke and were told a child may have been inside.
Deputies were able to gain access by breaking a back window but were unsuccessful in locating
the child. Fire department personnel arriving on the scene were able to locate the youngster who
was taken to a Jefferson City hospital and pronounced dead. Three deputies were also taken to
the hospital, where they were treated for smoke inhalation before being released. The cause of the fire
is under investigation by the state fire marshal’s office.
