It’s no secret that open burning poses a major headache every year for fire districts here in the Lake Area. All too often, what starts as a controlled burn ends up spreading out of control and becomes a structure fire. The chances of that happening, however, can be minimized by clearing out what’s known as the “urban interface”…or the area between your house and the woodline before you start burning…
Southwest Fire District Chief Mike Hufferd was joined by Mid-County Chief Scott Frandsen on Monday’s “Morning Magazine.” It’s recommended that you clear any debris or other brush for, at least, a 150 foot diameter away from your house…perhaps even further toward the southwest which is often the direction of springtime winds that could potentially fan any wildland fires.
