According to a member of the family, the former Sheriff was placed on a ventilator on December 17th.
Though he made progress, he developed a second infection on the 28th.
Sheriff Abbott spent more than 16 serving the residents of Miller County.
He was first appointed to the office in April 1999 and retired in December 2016.
During his time as Sheriff, he was instrumental in forming the Mid-Missouri Drug Task Force and establishing policies and procedures for deputy conduct.
Before his election as Sheriff, Mr. Abbott served in the Missouri National Guard for 22 years. There he held a variety of positions, including as a motor vehicle operator, materials handler, and as the Armory Sergeant for the 135th Maintenance Unit.
In 2019, Governor Mike Parson appointed Mr. Abbott to to the Petroleum Storage Tank Insurance Fund Board of Trustees.
