A former teacher at School of the Osage avoids a court trial by withdrawing his not guilty plea and entering into a plea deal. Appearing with his attorney Tuesday morning in Miller County Circuit Court, now 46-year-old Mark Edwards entered a guilty plea on the unclassified felony of statutory sodomy or attempted statutory sodomy-deviate sexual intercourse with a person under the age of 14. In exchange for the guilty plea, one felony count of sexual contact with a student is dismissed while two other felony counts, which were severed from the original four-count charge, are being remanded back to the associate circuit court. On those counts, Edwards will be sentenced to one year with credit for time served on an amended charge from child molestation down to sexual abuse while the fourth count, what was originally another sexual contact with a student charge, is dismissed. By entering the plea on the statutory sodomy count, Edwards could be sentenced to up to 20 years in the department of corrections. A sentencing assessment report has been ordered and formal sentencing is now set for February 6, 2020.
