A funeral protest ordinance may soon be in place in Camdenton. At their meeting Tuesday night, the Board of Alderman discussed an ordinance that would prohibit any protest within 300 feet of any residence, cemetery, funeral home, church, or synagogue from happening an hour before or an hour after any actual funeral or burial service is being held.
Camdenton City Administrator Brenda Colter says the ordinance follows closely to a similar one passed in Manchester. That ordinance was upheld last year by the US Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit.
Colter says there have not been protests at any funerals in Camdenton, but says the board wants to move forward on the ordinance out of respect for families that have lost loved ones. Colter says if the ordinance passes, they are not anticipating any legal challenges.
The ordinance will be up for a vote at the Board of Alderman’s next meeting on Tuesday, February 5th.
