Governor Nixon has sent a letter to the superintendents of each of Missouri’s 520 public school districts stating his clear opposition to arming teachers and taking away authority of local schools districts to keep guns out of the classroom. The governor says in the days and weeks ahead, he will engage with Missourians to find common sense solutions to keep schools safe. Nixon says “Putting loaded weapons in classrooms is quite simply the wrong approach to a serious issue that demands careful analysis and thoughtful solutions.” More than two dozen Missouri lawmakers already have signed on to legislation that would allow teachers and administrators with concealed gun permits to carry weapons in schools.
