The proposed income tax bill has been vetoed by Governor Jay Nixon. In a new release, Nixon called Senate Bill 509 “an unaffordable, unfair and dangerous scheme that would drain funding from public services and do nothing to help working families.” Republicans say they will try and override the veto. Supporters of the bill also say they’re not surprised by the governor’s action and say Nixon is misinterpreting the bill’s language and insist it would not pose a threat to education funding. Nixon’s veto now sets up an override fight with two weeks left in the legislative session.
