It may now be more difficult to sue Missouri businesses.

Governor Mike Parson has signed a bill that raises the standard for punitive damages awarded to plaintiffs.

He says the bill requires a person suing a business to have clear and convincing evidence they were hurt intentionally without just cause or due to flagrant disregard for the safety of others.

Parson says the bill restores integrity in the Missouri Merchandising Practices Act by taking more objective measures to figure out damages and to reign in attorney’s fees.
