The Foundation Formula for grades K-12 survives the budget axe being lowered by Governor Eric Greitens. Higher education, however, is taking an $82-million cut as part of the governor’s $146.4 million in spending restrictions announced this week. Greitens says the cuts are part of an overall plan to cut 700-million over the next 18 months which the state needs to do just to balance the budget. Reduced revenue due to poor economic growth under previous Governor Jay Nixon is blamed by Greitens for the cuts being necessary. Programs essential to public safety and the state’s pension and health care obligations also were spared being cut.
