The special prosecutor that was looking into the drowning of an Iowa man while in the custody of the Highway Patrol’s Water Division believes she’s being blackmailed. Amanda Grellner recently asked to be removed from the case citing a conflict of interest. Now there are reports the conflict may be related to a situation involving her son from three years ago. Grellner believes false information is being aired about that investigation and also that she somehow owes the Highway Patrol a personal favor. According to sources close to the investigation, she is stepping down from the Ellingson case because she doesn’t want to further “taint” it and believes a new prosecutor is needed that can take a fresh look at the case. In January, Grellner had reopened the investigation after additional information was obtained and may have been within days of reaching a decision in the case.
