As the calendar year comes to an end, the highway patrol is asking the public, once again, to make some smart choices to ring in the new year. Captain John J. Hotz says, before you head out for your New Year’s Eve celebration, make sure that you have a plan and follow it. That means having a designated and sober driver ready to get you home safely. Last year’s 102-hour New Year’s counting period covered a weekend and resulted in 11 people being killed and 447 others being injured on Missouri roadways…or one person every 13.4 minutes of the counting period. This year the official counting period covers only 30 hours beginning at 6-PM Tuesday night and coming to an end at 11:59-PM Wednesday night.
