The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the Christmas counting period proved to be more dangerous this year despite the number of accidents, statewide, being down over the same time period. There were 60 accidents investigated by the highway patrol, down about eight percent, but resulting in eight more injuries and four more fatalities, six this year compared to only two last year. There were also 68 DWI arrests for the holiday period this year compared to 47 during 2015. Here in the Lake Area, Camden, Miller and Morgan counties, there was just one accident covered this year by the highway patrol with 3 people arrested, only one for DWI. In the meantime, with the New Year’s holiday counting period right around the corner, authorities here in the Lake Area are putting the call out, again, to make sure you and anyone else in a car you are driving are buckled up. It’s no guarantee but statistics have indicated that you are less likely to die in a car wreck if you do wear a seat belt. Over the most recent Christmas counting period, five of the six people who died statewide in car wrecks were NOT wearing a seat belt.
