An investigation is underway for the recent rise in propane prices. Missouri attorney general Chris Koster announced earlier this week that his office will investigate “price gouging” in the propane industry. Koster received a call from Bolivar senator Mike Parsons saying he felt that companies caused the shortage to boost profits. Koster said consumer investigators in his office have already participated in a multi-state conference call with the propane industry leaders and will coordinate with officials in nine other Midwestern states to determine the cause of the price increase. In the last week, propane prices have risen to more than $5 per gallon around the Midwest. The Missouri propane and gas association said the rising costs are caused by higher exports and increased domestic demand due to colder weather and large crop yields. A bigger look at the issue in the propane industry will be discussed this Friday during the news rewind on the Ozarks today.
