One of the last of the classic Route 66 bridges is now facing destruction after the Missouri Department of Transportation decided to close it due to structure issues last month. Several Lake Area residents have formed a group whose goal is to save the bridge and are now partitioning MODOT to preserve and restore the bridge. According to area engineer Bob Lynch, the bridge has serious rust issues and severe section loss where the steel had simply rusted away. Another issue with the bridge being closed is the closure of a detour route for Interstate 44. On Tuesday, over 20 people stood on the bridge to support its restoration instead of destruction. Lynch says they’ll know in late January where it will go next.
