Laurie Mayor Scott Fahrer is on a mission to lower water rates in his city after results from a study revealed a four person family uses 6,438 gallons on average, at a cost of $108.41 a month. Only one other town studied has water rates higher than the city of Laurie. The board tabled a request by Mayor Fahrer to obtain a new water rate study in order to get bids from more than one engineering firm.
The Laurie Board of Aldermen tabled a decision this week on a suggestion to install water meters on cooks shacks in the city park that are privately owned. These buildings are used during festivals such as the hillbilly fair. The city found a water leak and a water cooled ice machine in several of the shacks to be the cause of extremely high water usage. The board is also considering disconnecting the water, except during events.
