Laurie has not yet considered the potential benefit of a bill passed in the legislature that would allow them to pursue a sales tax to help pay for public safety. The city previously voted to place a half-percent sales tax on the ballot, but rescinded it because it didn’t comply with state law. The new law passed during this session gave authorization for a half-percent tax to appear on the ballot. City Clerk Vanessa Hebrank says they’ve not yet examined the new law. She says when, and if, they decide to take advantage of it, the discussion will be placed on the agenda for the Board of Aldermen.
