Missouri’s new rules on bail for accused criminals are not working, and lawmakers are demanding a do-over. That’s the sentiment of 80+ legislators in Jefferson City who signed on to a letter that was sent to the Missouri Supreme Court this week. They want the rules rescinded. They also are calling for a more streamlined approach to reform, involving input from the legislature to craft a responsible and narrowly-tailored set of changes. The new rules went into effect last July and have resulted in increases in failure-to-appear rates as well as a number of suspects re-offending, sometimes within just days of their release from jail.
