A woman is dead and a man is in custody following a standoff with police in Rocky Mount.

The Miller County Sheriff’s office says it started as a call for a man who was armed inside of a home, threatening to kill a woman in the home.

Once inside the home, they found 57-year-old Terry Ewens who had a gun and was threatening to shoot them.

Deputies were able to take an unconscious 71-year-old woman they found in the home and transport her to the hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

A 51-year old woman was also able to escape during the standoff, but an 82-year-old man was stuck inside the home until deputies were able to take Ewens into custody.

An autopsy is tentatively planned for the woman and the investigation remains ongoing.

The Sheriff’s office was assisted by the Highway Patrol and other area police and sheriff’s departments.
