Authorities are still on the lookout in northeast Miller County for a man officials say is known to be armed and dangerous, but the active part of a manhunt that went on is over. According to Maries County Sheriff Chris Heitman, Maries County deputies were involved in a high-speed chase with the suspect. The suspect’s vehicle was found wrecked and abandoned just west of Meta in Miller County, and that is where the search was focused. Heitman says the suspect is identified as 47 Year old Vernon Phelps who has felony warrants out for his arrest. Deputies from Maries, Miller, and Osage Counties are assisting in the search. Phelps is known to carry weapons, and Heitman advises area residents to report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.
